Older cold water storage tanks and cladding on any converted cold-store sections are also worth checking, since asbestos cement was a common, durable choice for exactly this kind of agricultural fixture.

Because a barn conversion is by definition a change of use involving significant structural alteration, a refurbishment and demolition survey is a legal requirement before any intrusive work begins, covering the whole structure rather than just the section you’re converting first. Given how much of the roof and structure is often original agricultural fabric, it’s worth allowing extra time in your project programme for the survey and any resulting removal work, particularly if roofing sheets need professional removal and disposal.
