An asbestos management survey is a non-destructive inspection carried out in buildings that are in normal occupational use. Its purpose is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) that are present and could be disturbed during day-to-day activities, routine maintenance, or minor repair work. The survey produces an asbestos register and management plan – both of which are required by law for all non-domestic premises built before the year 2000.

An asbestos refurbishment survey – also known as a pre-refurbishment asbestos survey or Type 3 survey – is a mandatory inspection that must be carried out before any renovation, alteration, fit-out, or intrusive maintenance work begins on a building constructed or refurbished before the year 2000. Its purpose is to locate all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in the areas that will be disturbed by the planned works, so that asbestos can be safely removed or managed before contractors start on site.
